County Schools Challenge
Katie and Jake win best performance and team at the County Schools Challenge!
Katie Donnelly and Jake Walker represented the Academy by performing in a 'Dragon's Den' showdown at the Castle Theatre, Wellingborough on Thursday 2 July 2015.
Pupils from schools across Northamptonshire pitched their ideas on how to raise awareness and understanding of cyber-bullying and increase awareness of cyber-safety. Cyber-bullying and cyber-safety are a real and current issues which can be very distressing to the victim, their family and friends.
The County Schools Challenge was launched to pupils at the Academy in March. Year 9 pupils were asked to think about the causes and consequences of people's actions when using social networking sites and to come up with a business solution to address a social problem. After an in-school final Katie and Jake progressed to a semi-final event at Northamptonshire Police Headquarters and successfully secured a place in the final showdown.
Their innovative idea of designing and creating a cyber-help pack was pitched to a panel of judges on 2 July 2015. Katie and Jake dedicated a considerable amount of time and personal effort prior to the final. They designed a poster with a QR reader code which, when scanned, directs the user to their website. Their website ‘cyberbullying-cyberpack.weebly.com’ includes helpful advice and links to resolving cyber related issue. The cyber help pack also includes cyber related scenarios, a top trumps game, advice and teaching resources.
Katie and Jake won the best presentation and team at the final. They were commended by the Chief Inspector for their commitment to the challenge as well as their team work and overall effort. They also secured contact with Northamptonshire County Council who would like to link their website to their own cyber-bullying page.
The challenge is a really positive way to engage with young people and it is always inspiring to see the results of their hard work.
Well done Katie and Jake!
