Course Information

Key Stage 3 - Years 7, 8 and 9

Dance units are taught throughout the year, alternating with Drama.  The aim is to introduce students to lots of different styles of Dance; Contemporary, Capoeira, Street, Free Running, Physical Theatre and Jazz.  Students use their creative potential to communicate ideas based on a chosen theme.

The students are prepared for Dance/BTEC in Year 10, learning dance vocabulary and techniques.

A KS3 Dance club runs every week.

Key Stage 4 – Years 10 and 11

In Years 10 and 11 we offer the BTEC (NQF) Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Performing Arts (Dance). The BTEC course allows you to explore your passion for dance through individual units of work:

Year 10

  • Dance skills
  • Individual showcase

Year 11

  • Preparation, performance and production

As part of the individual showcase unit you will perform 2 contrasting dances based on a theme set by the exam board. Your dances will be performed and recorded for examination purposes. You will also have to write a letter of application for a job in the Performing Arts. This unit will be under exam conditions and externally assessed.

The dance skills unit of work will enable you to assess your own performing strengths and weaknesses through the use of a skills audit. This will enable you to focus on aspects of your performance that still need developing. This unit will allow you the opportunity to perform dances, suitable for public performances.

Preparation, Performance and production unit will become more intense as the emphasis shifts to working on producing a final performance.

It is essential to adopt a company atmosphere that will allow all performers to flourish and show their true potential as performers. There may be opportunities to collaborate with other subject areas to produce a highly professional production.
