Kingswood Secondary Academy

Ofsted Good

Welcome - message from Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back to Kingswood for the new academic year.  I trust that you all enjoyed the summer break and are refreshed and ready to go again!  As I write to you we are at the end of our first week and what a positive start it has been.  Pupils have returned looking smart and prepared to learn: our new Y7s have been a joy to have in the Academy.

I hope that you already aware, but I am pleased and delighted to announce the huge improvement in the exam results, particularly at GCSE. The results achieved last year in 2015 were very disappointing and below the floor standard that the government considers acceptable. Academies are now judged on a Progress 8 measure which looks at whether or not pupils make adequate progress given their ability on entry to the Academy. Owing to the hard work and dedication of our pupils, staff and parents we are now well above the floor standard for the first time. We are, of course, still aiming for further improvement but outcomes for pupils are better and heading in the right direction.  There were also several pupils who achieved exclusively A* to B grades in all the subjects they studied, outcomes that the ‘best’ private schools would be proud of. We should all feel proud and confident that pupils at Kingswood can, and do, achieve the very best results possible. A full exams write up about our improved GCSE and A Level results is available on the website.

Additionally, I have been into each year group’s first assembly and shown them that our best performing pupils in the summer exams (in terms of progress made regardless of academic ability) had the highest attendance and the lowest number of recorded incidents for poor behaviour; I also demonstrated that the reverse was true! This is my very simple message for the start of the year: come to school, put in the effort, behave well and achieve outstanding results.

It is also the time of year to be welcoming new staff to Kingswood. We are fortunate in having been able to recruit the following members of staff who I am sure will contribute fully to the continued improvement journey we are on:

Much work has also taken place over the summer break to improve the facilities at the Academy and so ensure that our pupils continue to enjoy outstanding educational opportunities. The dining room has been transformed from an overcrowded space to one that is now much larger and fit for purpose with the relocation of our dance facilities. A new dance floor has been purchased for the Expressive and Performing Arts department along with the provision of a new additional drama and performance classroom. Extensive decoration and refurbishment has also occurred and I am very thankful to our site team for their often unheralded dedication and work.

May I also take this opportunity to remind parents that if driving they may drop their pupils off on the Academy site in the morning, but should not come onto site at the end of the day? The reason for this is to avoid congestion with the school buses and disabled pupils needing clear access and egress.

If parents do need to purchase new uniform, though as already stated the vast majority of pupils look immaculate, then it is now exclusively available online with details available on our website.

We have also streamlined our telephone system with the pupil absence number no longer in use. If your child is going to be absent, simply call the normal Academy number and you will be given an option to report the absence.

And so the 2016 academic year begins. Let’s enjoy it continuing to work towards and celebrating our successes together.

Yours faithfully

Mr A Burton

Principal
