Industrial Action and Academy Closure

As you are probably aware the two largest teaching unions, the NUT and NASUWT have voted to take strike action in response to the proposed changes to teachers’ pensions.  This is a national dispute and not related to local matters.  Consequently, a number of regions across the country will be subject to strike action on Tuesday 1st October 2013.

Although the other teacher and support staff unions are not involved in the industrial action, colleagues have been advised not to ‘cover’ for striking teachers.  Given the significant proportion of teachers at the Academy taking industrial action, the decision has been made to close the school to all students in Years 7 to 11.  This therefore means that students in Years 7 to 11 should not attend school on Tuesday 1st October 2013. The Academy will remain open for students in the 6th Form.

Quite clearly this was not an easy decision to make but was based on our ability to adequately supervise students and provide any meaningful educational experience. We regret having to make this decision but having considered all the options available to us and the guidelines provided it is the only sensible course of action.

We recognise that this strike action may well cause some inconvenience to you and if it causes significant difficulties for your family we will be able to make available a limited number of supervised study places for students.  Anyone wishing to make use of this facility must complete and return the reply slip below to the Main Office by Friday 27th September and ensure that their child has work, which they can undertake independently.  Academy buses will continue to run on this day but no food will be available from the canteen.
