Year 9 BAND SLAM!

On Wednesday 27th of June, the drama studio rocked to the triumphant sounds of a handful of very brave Year 9 students.

Conceived and co-ordinated by Liz Olner, Wednesday saw the first ever Band Slam blow the roof off EP8. Six courageous groups took to the stage in front of a full audience to rock out a performance of a song that they had had very little time to get used to.

Let's make this absolutely clear: these were not performers who'd been together for years, these were Year 9s who'd been performing together for a matter of weeks and had mainly practised during their weekly Music lessons. That they were able to get in front of a crowd at all is a testament to their grit and determination.

There were a wide variety of tracks performed on the night from the frothy pop of Jessie J, through to the quite niche instrumental stylings of the theme from the film Deathnote. The choices represented the wide and eclectic musical tastes that our Year 9 students have and showed them to be a diverse bunch.

The nerves before the performances were immense, with racing hearts and shaking hands all round. However, no-one backed down from the challenge and each band took their turn in the limelight and got through their chosen tune.

Judging took place while the crowd were serenaded by an energetic version of the Arctic Monkeys ' bet that you look good on the dance floor' by Year 10 Music BTEC boys.  The final decision was not easily reached, with no little heartache and argument between the judges but a result was required.

Third place went to Rebecca Rouchy and Talisha South for their version of Sugar We're Going Down Swinging. Second place went to Emma Donnelly, Jack Maxey and Leia Cameron for Jesus of Suburbia. First place went to Jess Nicholson, Annie Collyer, Jess Hewitt, Erin Hynds and Amber Lenton for an excellent performance of 1000 Miles.

The whole event was slick and polished and was another great hit for Liz and the Music Department, which I'm sure will become a regular event in the busy arts calendar.

Well done to all involved!
